Solar power for German roofs and Chinese villages
SolarWorld AG in Bonn is Germany's fastest growing company in 2008. This is
the conclusion of a study by the management consultancy Bain & Company
conducted on behalf of the business magazine 'Wirtschaftswoche'. In its
current edition the magazine emphasizes the company's concentration on the
core business of solar power technology and the coverage of the complete
solar value chain from silicon as the raw material to finished solar
modules as the main success factors. In terms of return on investment,
return on equity, growth and sales SolarWorld AG has come out at the top of
280 publicly quoted companies in Germany.
The main business of SolarWorld AG lies in solar power applications for
roofs and for large-scale solar generating plants in Germany, Europe and
the future growth market for solar energy - the USA. At the same time
SolarWorld also promotes access to energy in off-grid regions all over the
world. Thus, the company has been promoting the solar electrification of
more than one hundred villages in the West of China that had previously
been cut off from the power supply. As a result 29,000 people in a total of
142 villages in the thinly populated provinces of Xinjiang, Qinghai and
Yunnan will for the first time be given access to electricity. Within the
framework of a co-operation project between the Federal Republic of Germany
and the People's Republic of China SolarWorld AG has equipped each of these
villages with a solar power generating plant. All in all, the solar power
output of the SolarWorld plants adds up to 1.2 Megawatt (MW). The solar
power group has thus further strengthened its off-grid business the
objective of which is to equip regions far removed from central power grids
with efficient, decentralized solar power technology.
The power plants provide an annual production of some 1.1 million kilowatt
hours of solar power which is mainly used for lighting and for the
operation of smaller electrical appliances, radios and television sets in a
total of 7,300 households. 'The project in China shows that even on a
larger scale remote regions can be supplied with solar power. Participation
in modern life and economic development are thus made possible for the
first time', says Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman and CEO of
SolarWorld AG.
